Speed Records: World’s Fastest Production Car, Motorcycle and Boat

Hennessey Venom GT Grey front.Man’s need for adventure, risk and excitement is taken to the extreme with the hyper-fast vehicles we create. At the highest end of manufacturing, one can find productive vehicles of immense power. While there is little need for this power, people still forge and innovate new technologies to push mankind into the next era of speed. This need for speed cannot be explained, nor does it need to be explained. It has always and will always exist.

While there are world speed records for a multitude of specialty vehicle types, we would instead like to focus on production vehicles. These are vehicles that are available to consumers for purchase.

World’s Fastest Production Car: Hennessey Venom GT

Hennessey Venom GT Grey back.As of late 2016, the world’s fastest production car is the Hennessey Venom GT. There is some debate over the legitimacy of the Hennessey’s position in the top spot. Technically, it is not mass-produced; it is hand-built. Additionally, its record speed of 270.4 mph set at the Kennedy Space Center was only in one direction. Some believe that record speeds only count if the car attempts both directions.

Nonetheless, many still consider the Hennessey Venom GT the fastest production car available. With the chassis of a Lotus Elise, a 7.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and 1,244 horsepower, the Hennessey’s top speed of 270.4 mph just barely beat’s out the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s record speed of 269.86 mph.

A new Hennessy Venom GT will likely cost you more than $1.5 million.
