I cannot reach a live person at Experian either. It tells me it cannot verify my identity, which is the exact reason I am calling in and need to speak to a person. Once it says it cannot identify me, it gives the options for self service and disconnecting the call. Not super helpful at all. Transunion was extremely helpful and polite. Equifax was not polite at all but was easy to get on the phone and he did his job. He constantly sighed as if it was a bother, but he still did it.

I am up to approximately 25 calls now, to Experian. On the rare occasions when I can get through to an actual person, they have been unable to help. MY best guess would be somewhere around 6 hours wasted on them. They keep telling me to call back in 48 or 72 hours. I tried again today and, once again, was not able to get past their automated system. It keeps telling me all the wonderful things I can do on their website, but if I can’t access the website (the reason I am calling) it doesn’t do me much good. Experian is making the cable companies and the cell phone companies look easy by comparison. This is hands down the WORST customer service I have ever had to deal with

Hmm. I’m sorry, John. Perhaps they are having trouble verifying your identity. You may also need to enter the numeric portion of your address for them to verify it. I was able to get through just now in one minute fifteen seconds. Probably doesn’t matter, but just to note, I enter my info using the keypad rather than saying it too. That’s for steps one and two. Also, sometimes you have to wait a long time for things to happen (may be silent for several seconds). I also wait until the automated system lists all my options, or at least mentions the appropriate option before taking action. For example, I wait until she gives me the option to say ‘different question’ before saying it…

I called earlier in the day per Wesley’s instructions. Yesterday at 4:05 CST, today at 11:50 CST. Still no luck. At step 2 i am prompted for the numeric portion of my address, not my zip code. At step 5 there is not a prompt to continue in English. The system gives me another prompt..
I tried asking for ‘agent’ and’ representative’. All I get is that no one is available.
Looking at my recent phone history, I have now called Experian 13 times at different times of the day and using different phone numbers. I can’t get in to their website either. I am still unable to talk to a human to help me fix that.

Hi Sunshine, thanks for sharing all of that information! I am sorry the steps for Experian did not work for you. I tested them just now and they worked for me. The only addition was that I had to enter ‘1’ at the end to continue in English. Do you know which step caused the issue for you? Perhaps they didn’t have any agents available at that time or something with your credit file made it more difficult for the automated system to verify your identity. Hopefully, you were able to take care of what you needed to do.

I was able to contact two of the three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax) and speak with a ‘live’ person. The process listed for Experian to speak with a live person did not work for me. However, you can freeze your accounts at using their automated system: Experian provided a confirmation number; TransUnion has you set up a PIN number. I did contact TransUnion (a live representative) to verify that my information was ‘frozen’ and they provided a a confirmation number as well. Equifax, I spoke to a live representative who provided me with a confirmation number. Experian and Equifax both communicated that information will be sent to my mailing address as well. Equifax’s representative did provide me with information to purchase extra security for a monthly fee that can be canceled at any time; so that’s an option as well. Equifax and Experian also communicated that you must contact all three credit bureaus to ‘freeze’ your information.

I got through to Experian Mortgage Services quite quickly. They are the organization my lender used to pull my credit. They were able to tell me that the bank only pulled my credit once (and not the 10 times they charged me for), and also that there was no lock on my credit. Seems to be a systems malfunction on the bank’s end. Armed with that information, the bank had to remove the extra charges and get my load back on track.

    Thank you very much!

Heads up. I’ve nearly lost the house I was purchasing because of this.

The main dashboard page on Experian.com where you see your current score on the left and your freeze status on the right, don’t trust it. I unlocked my credit for the mortgage lender to run my report. They ran it 9 times and charged me almost $200 to do it, then showed me that it was locked. I found on the left side of the Experian page another link to manage a Freeze, and that page showed ‘locked’ unlocking it there seems to have worked. I’m here to call them and verify, which seemed impossible because the AI said it can only transfer in certain circumstances, but would not say which.

A few days later, the same Charge Off for the same card appeared in another ‘alert’ (all screen shots available) showing a ‘New Charge Off’ date going back to when the account was actually CLOSED, over 8 years ago. I have tried to reach a human at Transunion to simply ask for clarification of this ‘New Charge Off’ date to no avail. Hi Joan, I’m very sorry to hear that. The freeze would have to have been placed on there by you, so all you should have to do is ask them to temporarily lift or remove the credit freeze altogether.

Unfortunately, the credit bureaus never make it easy to speak to someone and the system appears have changed. Now it just sends me in a loop when it says it’s getting me over to someone. I’ll check again next week to see if they fix that part, but I wouldn’t doubt it is on purpose…. 🙁

Wasn’t able to find another way to speak to someone with TransUnion at this time without selecting one of the specific options and entering my information to test, but I don’t currently have a freeze or otherwise. Will continue seeing if I can get through to a person another way next week.

Have you tried removing the credit freeze over the phone or through their website yet?

Hi James, I’m sorry to hear you were having issues making your payment due to COVID. It has been really hard on many of us. Unfortunately, since you were late there isn’t much you can do but make the request with Discover to have it removed while making your payments on time going forward. As time passes your credit score will improve if you continue to make your payments on time. I would try calling them again to plead your case, then politely ask to escalate to a manager if you are unsuccessful with the initial customer service rep. If you are not successful on your next call you should send them a goodwill letter with your request. Try again after you’ve made another on-time payment or two. This article may help. Best of luck!

Capital one was willing to work with me to get caught up, which I have done. I was only able to speak with a rep from Equifax and she said she would file a dispute. Hey Raymond, sorry to hear about your troubles. Unfortunately, a lot of people, including myself, have had trouble with the Experian website. It seems to be an ongoing theme. You could ask the refi company which credit bureau they use to check your credit and if it’s not Experian you won’t have to worry about it. Otherwise, you could file a complaint with the BBB and keep trying..

Also, it could just be a glitch on their website and the lender may still receive your actual score. You can also obtain your Experian FICO scores through myFICO.com which may give you a better indication as to whether it’s just the Experian website or something else.

When I attempted to call them this morning, I could only play phone roulette with no real options for help and a continual loop. I tried (888) 548-7878, (800) 493-1058, (888) 397-3742, (224) 698-5600, (714) 830-7000 & (833) 467-1570 multiple times each. I even tried the online “Chat” option. After explaining my problem, I was told that there was a problem and I would need to try back later. This is anger inducing. I fully understand (although I do not condone it) why some people get to the point of snapping and going on shooting rampages.
How do I rectify my situation?

Hey Edward, I’m sorry to hear they raised your rate. Sure, you could try another credit bureau if you are still having issues getting in touch with Experian.

I’m not sure they would have the answer for you though. If you request a copy of your credit report and know what types of things to look for you might be able to guess why the card’s interest rate was raised, but ultimately it was the issuer that raised the rate based on something that may or may not be on your credit report.

I finally called 800-493-1058 and after 4 attempt pressing what you suggest, I finally reached a person and explained that I had requested a report on line, received message it would be sent to my email, but when I tried to access the report, it said unable to process my request. The Agent said I would need to speak with member services. I asked her to transfer me and when I was transferred, I was transferred to the same number I had called ending in 3792 and was once again in a loop. How is one supposed to correct errors, or report fraud, if you are unable to even speak to an agent. What good is a credit bureau that only report problems but then one can’t correct them. What a nightmare.

First I called Transunion. I had a real person on the line in less than 2 minutes! He was professional and got the freeze lifted in less than 10 minutes.

Next was Equifax. The questions are pretty easy if you remember when you got certain credit cards and the credit limits. There was even a trick question in there that I caught right away and we had a good laugh. Freeze lifted immediately.

Experian was a delightful experience. (Can you believe I said that?) The person was very professional and handled everything quickly. Lots of credit card questions and a few unexpected questions but nothing like taking a calculus test 😉

Be sure to ask for a confirmation number and it might help in case of a glitch to write down the name of the person you spoke to.

Thank you so very much for posting the information for us. I think I’d still be pulling my hair out without that help. Just be sure you listen carefully to the prompts.

When I went to that website and submitted all of my information they then told me they were sorry but they could not unfreeze my credit from this website. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?? I had to now ….this is where it gets disastrous it’s a real nightmare ….. send them an actual snail-mail letter saying that I want my credit report unfrozen along with a picture of my driver’s license and either a utility bill or bank statement verifying my address. I could not believe they wanted an actual snail-mail letter when TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE…🤬

I have a friend in Fort Worth Texas and it’s 45-minute drive to Allen Texas where the Experian headquarters is. My girlfriend offered to drive the letter request along with copies of my driver’s license and bank statement there to the office and hand them the envelope. She was kind enough to do that on Thursday of last week. She took a picture of her and my letter and trying to hand it to a guard and the guard has his hand up denying the letter. The guard at the gate said no one can enter and she could not even give him the envelope to give to someone inside. The guard would not allow her to give anyone the envelope. Such BS.

She ended up having to go to Allen Texas post office (which is a small town so it wasn’t difficult to find). She was told to actually mail it. She bought a stamp and mailed the letter an hour later Thursday afternoon. It should’ve gotten there on Friday. Today’s Wednesday and SBA says my credit is still frozen. It is so effed up. I am pulling my hair out and starting to drink. SBA says that my application will be deleted because they need to keep things fresh and if my credit is not unfrozen and two more days I have to start all over again. Meanwhile property taxes are April 10. I have a hotel and all of my business is zero now everyone has canceled of course. I have zero income. Experian is a joke. They only have one-star reviews. That should be enough – I will not give my soc sec # to anyone, especially on an automatic phone line. I have tried for days to get into your system. I did receive a “oog report” on setting up my account; however, when I tried to get the “boost my credit score” it asked what my bank personal number was – I don’t have one and it wouldn’t let me go further.

The I receive a notification from you than my credit score has decreased (an alert) – but now I cannot access my account – no way – no how – called for help but can’t get further than giving my SS# which I will not do.

Hi Doria, that’s ridiculous. Based on one of the telephone numbers you listed I’m guessing you’re trying to get in touch with Experian? You might want to call your card company and tell them to deny that transaction going forward. That’s one way stop future debits by them. If it’s a credit card and you can prove you cancelled your subscription you might be able dispute the last couple of charges if you’re still not getting cooperation from the credit bureau. Hi Marian, here’s how to get your free annual credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com. You can also get your credit report directly from the credit bureaus. However, if you need your FICO credit scores along with your credit report from each of the credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax; the easiest thing would be to pay for them through myFICO or a similar service. You FICO score is the most common credit score used by lenders and you never know which credit report they are going to look at so it’s best to know what’s in them all and clean-up any inaccuracies as necessary. Another thing you could do is check with your credit card issuers for access to at least one of your credit scores. Or use a free online provider that provides access to some of your credit reports and VantageScore, which should give you a general idea of where you stand.
